How to Space Morse Code

Keep a one-unit pause between the dots and dashes inside one character, a three-unit pause between letters, and a seven-unit pause between words. In plain text, this site uses one space between letters and a slash between words.

For example, HELLO is .... . .-.. .-.. ---, while HELLO WORLD places a slash between the two words.

SOS: Letters vs. Continuous Signal

When written as three letters, SOS appears as ... --- .... The formal distress signal is sent continuously as ...---..., without normal letter gaps. The pattern is distinctive because it combines three short, three long, and three short signals.

Standard and Accuracy

The characters and timing on this page are checked against the International Telecommunication Union recommendation for International Morse code. See the source notes or the International Morse code reference for standards, timing, and operating signs.
